Kentucky National Guardsman Staff Sgt. Beery killed in Iraq

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Governor Ernie Fletcher has directed that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff in honor of Staff Sgt. Brock A. Beery, 33, of Whitehouse, Tenn.

Beery, a member of the 2nd Battalion, 123rd Armor based in Bowling Green, was killed in Iraq on Thursday when his armored vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device near Al Habbaniyah.

“The First Lady and I mourn the loss of Staff Sgt. Beery, and our heartfelt condolences go out to his family,” said Governor Ernie Fletcher. “Staff Sgt. Beery bravely choose to serve his country with the Kentucky National Guard, and we honor him for that service. His courage and bravery will always be remembered. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”

Flags will remain at half-staff throughout the state until sunset on the day of Beery’s funeral. Services are pending at this time.

Beery is the ninth member of the Kentucky National Guard to die in Iraq.
