Governor Ernie Fletcher Praised U.S. House for Increasing Liheap Funds
Funding provides needed assistance to Kentucky families
FRANKFORT, Ky. - Governor Ernie Fletcher today praised the U.S. House of Representatives for passing H.R. 2320 yesterday. The resolution will increase funding an additional $1 billion in FY06 for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) that assists families in need of financial relief with their heating bills.
“This is great news for families who struggle to pay their heating bills,” said Governor Fletcher. “LIHEAP is a program that puts people first. I applaud the action of the House.”
Earlier this year Governor Fletcher announced that Kentucky received an emergency increase of $2.5 million in federal funds for LIHEAP. In addition, Senator Alice Forgy Kerr (R-Lexington) introduced a Senate committee substitute to House Bill 283 which doubled the amount of state funds for LIHEAP to $10 million. The emergency federal appropriation, combined with the funds provided by HB 283 brought the state’s total LIHEAP appropriation for FY 2005-06 to more than $36 million.
“Additional federal funds will help even more Kentuckians with the needs of their families,” Governor Fletcher said. “H.R. 2320 is a good thing for the commonwealth.”
