Governor calls on House to act quickly on Senate Bill 38

Frankfort, KY: Governor Ernie Fletcher commended the Kentucky Senate today for its passage of the Cabinet for Economic Development reorganization bill. The bill now awaits approval by the Kentucky State House of Representatives.

“It is important for the House to act quickly on this important bill,” Governor Fletcher said.  “This legislation continues the diligent work of my administration to bring efficiency and effectiveness to every aspect of state government.  The confirmation of cabinet reorganization is essential to this process.”

The reorganization of the Cabinet for Economic Development will streamline and improve efficiency by:

  • Placing all internal administrative services under the Office of the Secretary: Office of Legal Services; Office of Research and Information Technology; and Office of Administration and Support eliminating the Department of Administration and Support.
  • Placing all public services under a Department headed by a Commissioner: Department for New Business Development; Department for Financial Incentives; Department for Existing Business Development; Department for Regional Development; and Department of Innovation and Commercialization for a Knowledge Based Economy.  The Department of Innovation and Commercialization for a Knowledge Based Economy replaces the Office of the New Economy.

The Senate officially approved the reorganization of the Transportation Cabinet (SB 39), Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet (SB 41), Personnel Cabinet (SB 43), Kentucky Office of Homeland Security (SB 44), Education Cabinet (SB 46) and Finance and Administration Cabinet (SB 49) on Monday.

Senator Dan Kelly, R-Springfield sponsored the reorganization bills.  Governor Fletcher thanked Senator Kelly and members of leadership for “passing these important bills in a timely manner.  I hope the House leadership will work in a similar manner to affirm these important reforms.”
