National Guard troops dispatched to assist town hard hit by tornado

FRANKFORT, Ky. - Governor Ernie Fletcher tonight declared a state of emergency for the town of Munfordville after a tornado struck the heart of the Hart County town early Sunday.

As part of that declaration, Governor Fletcher has directed the Kentucky National Guard to send 40 troops to Munfordville to assist state and local law enforcement in patroling the area. A mandatory curfew of 9:00 pm is in place for the town beginning tonight.

Early estimates place damage costs in Hart County from the tornado at $2.1 million.  According to damage assessments, 44 homes and two businesses in Munfordville suffered major damage, 34 homes and six businesses had minor damage and 25 homes were deemed uninhabitable.

Governor Fletcher also surveyed tornado damage in Crittenden County and spoke with officials by phone in Henderson County about damage caused by an F-3 tornado that struck Kentucky and Indiana. Cost estimates in those areas are on-going.
