I commend President Bush and Congress for enacting the Energy Policy Act of 2005, which will strengthen our energy security and lower future energy prices for the Nation.  For Kentuckians, the energy bill can be summed up in one word: “jobs.”  The clean coal provisions alone are predicted to create 62,000 new jobs in the US.  As one of the top three coal producing states in the Nation, this is a great win for Kentucky.  Moreover, the clean coal technology provisions will reduce power plant emissions by ensuring future investment in the most advanced power plants ever constructed.

The bill is a win for coal and other energy resources in Kentucky.  By requiring the use of 7.5 billon gallons of ethanol by 2012, we will reduce foreign oil imports by 80,000 barrels a day and provide a long-term US market for Kentucky’s farm-grown fuels.

The Energy Task Force, which I established to develop Kentucky’s first-ever Comprehensive Energy Strategy, published its report in February of this year.  My Administration is working hard to implement its 54 recommendations.  I will work equally hard to ensure that Kentucky’s consumers and industries benefit from the Federal government’s long-term investment in our Nation’s energy security.
