Governor Ernie Fletcher announces Joy Mining Machinery to locate in Lebanon

FRANKFORT, KY – Governor Ernie Fletcher and Economic Development Cabinet Secretary Gene Strong announced today that Joy Mining Machinery, a global leader in the development, manufacture, distribution and service of underground mining equipment, to locate its new manufacturing and service operation in Lebanon.  The $7.1 million investment will create more than 200 new jobs in the commonwealth.

“Today’s announcement that an internationally respected company such as Joy Mining Machinery has chosen Kentucky to locate its newest operation emphasizes our continuing commitment to bring new jobs and new opportunities to the commonwealth,” Governor Fletcher said. 

“Marion County and the entire state will gain a tremendous economic boost by the addition of more than 200 new jobs and the multi-million dollar investment.  We commend Secretary Strong and his staff for their work in bringing more than 4,000 new jobs to Kentucky in the last two months,” Governor Fletcher added.

The company has purchased a 90,000 square foot building on 13 acres in Marion County which is expected to be operational by fall 2005.

“We are excited to be expanding our operations to Lebanon,” said Mike Sutherlin, President of Joy Mining Machinery.  “We will be ideally located to serve our customers in Kentucky and surrounding states.”

Headquartered in Warrendale, Pennsylvania, Joy Mining Machinery was founded in 1919 by Joseph Joy and is the leading producer of underground mining equipment for coal and other bedded materials like trona, salt and gypsum.  Its parent company, Joy Global Inc., is located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin as is Joy Mining’s sister company, P&H Mining Equipment, which manufactures electric shovels, drills and draglines for surface mining operations. Joy Global Inc. had combined sales of $1.4 billion in 2004.

All Joy Mining Machinery products are distributed and supported by the company’s 46 facilities located in eight countries around the world. The Joy facilities include sales offices, manufacturing plants, service centers and/or parts warehouses located in Australia, India, People’s Republic of China, Poland, Russia, South Africa, United Kingdom and the United States. Two of its warehouses are currently located in Henderson and Lovely, Kentucky.

The Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority (KEDFA) approved Joy Mining Machinery for tax benefits up to $4.6 million under the Kentucky Rural Economic Development Act (KREDA), an incentive program designed to increase manufacturing employment in the commonwealth.
