FRANKFORT, KY – Governor Ernie Fletcher and Cabinet for Economic Development Secretary Gene Strong announced today that Humana Inc., Kentucky’s largest publicly traded company, will expand operations in Louisville and Northern Kentucky creating a total of 1,113 new jobs for Kentuckians.  The new jobs would have an annual payroll of more than $55 million.

“As a physician I know the important role health care plays in Kentucky’s economy,” Governor Fletcher said.  “We commend the leadership of Humana and Secretary Strong for their cooperation in making our commonwealth a major player in the growing health care industry.”

The announcement came after the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority (KEDFA) preliminarily approved the company for incentives under the Kentucky Jobs Development Act (KJDA) for the project at its monthly meeting this morning in Frankfort.

"We appreciate the strong support we received from Governor Fletcher and the Cabinet for Economic Development as we developed our expansion plans," said Michael B. McCallister, president and chief executive officer of Humana. "As a Kentucky corporation, we're excited by the opportunity to add more jobs in our home state as we pursue a number of growth opportunities."

The combined $5.7 million investment will be spread out over 4 locations, including its headquarters in Downtown Louisville.  Humana is considering property on Bishop Lane and elsewhere in Downtown Louisville for 2 other parts of the expansion.  Newport in Northern Kentucky was chosen as its 4th expansion location.

“Helping local companies expand is an essential part of our economic development strategy,” said Steve Higdon, Greater Louisville Inc.’s president and CEO.  “Humana’s expansion is a major boost for Kentucky’s economic engine, as its effects will be felt across the city, region and state.”

“Humana’s significant expansion in Northern Kentucky is evidence of the region’s business vitality and ability to support and retain similar top caliber organizations,” said Steve Pendery, Chairman Northern Kentucky Tri- County Economic Development Corporation. “We look forward to expanding and supporting Humana over the long term in Northern Kentucky.”

Humana Inc., headquartered in Louisville, offers coordinated health insurance coverage and related services to employer groups, government-sponsored plans and individuals.  With approximately 7 million medical members located primarily in 15 states and Puerto Rico, Humana has proven over its 44-year history that it embraces change and has seized opportunities that have helped to transform its business.
