Former Montgomery County Jailer Pleads Guilty to Misappropriating County Funds
Attorney General Jack Conway and Kerry B. Harvey, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky, jointly announce the guilty plea of former Montgomery County Jailer Everett Dewayne Myers on charges he misappropriated thousands of dollars belonging to the county government during his tenure.
Myers, 51, pled guilty on March 23, 2012 to a charge of theft from a county agency that receives federal funds. According to the plea agreement, Myers misappropriated $66,989 over the course of several years and he acknowledged engaging in a kickback scheme with jail vendors. The jail vendors created invoices for exaggerated or bogus services at Myers' direction. Myers paid the vendors for the services listed on the invoices with jail funds and then received money from the vendors. From 2007 until 2008, the Montgomery County jail received more than $10,000 in federal funds.
The charges against Myers are the result of an investigation by General Conway's Department of Criminal Investigations. Myers waived his right to be charged via a federal indictment and pled guilty to the charge brought directly by the U.S. Attorney.
Myers will be sentenced in June. He faces a maximum of 10 years in prison. However, before issuing a sentence, the court must consider the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and the statute governing the imposition of sentences.
