Mason County High Claims State LifeSmarts Championship

Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway is pleased to announce that Mason County High took top honors in the 12th annual LifeSmarts state competition held yesterday on the campus of Kentucky State University. Runners-up in the annual competition were the Grant County 4-H team followed by the Bracken County High team. LifeSmarts is a consumer education game-show style competition sponsored by the National Consumer League and coordinated in Kentucky by the Office of the Attorney General, Department of Financial Institutions, the Louisville branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, the Better Business Bureau and the Kentucky 4-H Cooperative Extension Service.

“I would like to congratulate Mason County for their first place finish and commend all of the students who participated in the LifeSmarts competition,” General Conway said. “It is more important than ever for Kentuckians, both young and old, to be wise consumers.”

Mason County’s winning team was coached by teacher Maggie Prater. The team members included Connor Appelman, Garric Buzzard, Amrita Srinivasan, Andrew Ward, and Simon Segal. The team will represent Kentucky at the national LifeSmarts competition in Hollywood, CA in April. A team from Mason County High also took top honors in last year’s LifeSmarts competition and represented the Commonwealth in the national competition in Miami, FL.

Students who participated in LifeSmarts tested their knowledge and skills by answering questions in the areas of health and safety, personal finance, environment and technology, and consumer rights and responsibilities. Teams qualified online for the chance to meet face-to-face in Frankfort.

Regional experts in these areas served as officials for the competition and included a representative from the KY State Treasurer’s Office, Consumer Credit Counseling Services, the Commonwealth Credit Union, the KY Department of Public Health, the Better Business Bureau, the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, Louisville Branch, and the Attorney General’s Office.
