Attorney General Conway Presents Lifesmarts Competition

Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway, in partnership with the Department of Financial Institutions, the Department of Insurance, the Better Business Bureau and the Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service, will host the 11th annual LifeSmarts state competition this Thursday, March 4th beginning at 8:45 a.m. in the Cooperative Extension Building on the campus of Kentucky State University.

LifeSmarts is a consumer education game-show style competition for high school students. The program addresses the need for more meaningful consumer education for high school students, and it is a fun way for teens to learn about consumer issues in the marketplace. Students first competed on-line to qualify to attend the state competition. Teams will now meet face-to-face with other teams to test their knowledge and skills by answering questions in the areas of health and safety, personal finance, environment and technology, and consumer rights and responsibilities.

A total of 10 qualifying teams from across the state will compete for the chance to represent Kentucky at the national LifeSmarts competition in Miami in April. Teams from Boyd, Bracken, Grant, Jefferson, Mason, Meade, Nelson and Woodford Counties will be competing for the state title. Kentucky’s team has received a first-runner-up award in a past national competition.

LifeSmarts is sponsored by the National Consumers League and is coordinated in Kentucky by the Office of the Attorney General in partnership with the Department of Financial Institutions, the Department of Insurance, and the Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service (4-H and Youth Development Programs), and the Better Business Bureau.  High schools interested in learning more about LifeSmarts may visit the LifeSmarts website at www.lifesmarts.org.
