Thursday, May 17, 2007 First Lady Glenna Fletcher today participated in the Habitat for Humanity Women Build project in Louisville. Mrs. Fletcher teamed up with Louisville’s Women for Habitat committee for the “Raise the Roof” portion of construction for the two newest Habitat houses. The First Lady and her staff were joined by Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet Secretary Teresa Hill and Education Cabinet Secretary Laura Owens.

Friday, October 27, 2006 First Lady Glenna Fletcher participated in a Red Ribbon Week event today in Frankfort, where she spoke about the importance of keeping children safe and drug-free. Mrs. Fletcher, who was joined by youth from across Kentucky, planted a red tulip in recognition of the theme of Red Ribbon Week: “Freedom is Drug-Free, Plant the Promise.” The theme is meant to symbolize hope and serve as a reminder to youth to stay drug-free. Brig. Gen. Norman Arflack, secretary of the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet, also participated in the event.

Wednesday, October 11, 2006 First Lady Glenna Fletcher and State Librarian Jim Nelson presented Lexington centenarian Helen Pohl with the Unbridled Spirit Award today during a ceremony at The Lafayette in Lexington. Pohl is the first Kentuckian to be inducted into the 10-Squared Talking Book Club, a national club sponsored by the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped which honors patrons older than 100 who are actively engaged in reading.

She was undaunted by racing in sub-zero weather or the concussions and broken bones she suffered. Breast cancer, however, proved to be a greater challenge than any she faced in her racing career.
