First Lady, Cabinet Secretaries Participate in Read for Life Event at Glendover Elementary
Officials read to students at school in Lexington
FRANKFORT, Ky. – First Lady Glenna Fletcher, cabinet secretaries and other state officials visited Glendover Global Studies Elementary School in Lexington on Friday to participate in Scholastic Read for 2007: Read for Life, a global initiative in which millions of children, parents and teachers celebrate the importance and enjoyment of reading.
“The Read for Life campaign is an exciting opportunity to promote the value and importance of reading,” said Mrs. Fletcher. “We are thrilled to support this global event, which will inspire our children to discover the joy of reading and help to provide the tools for success later in life.”
Mrs. Fletcher was joined by Justice Cabinet Secretary Brig. Gen. Norman Arflack, Personnel Cabinet Secretary Brian Crall, Finance and Administration Cabinet Secretary John Farris, Environment and Public Protection Cabinet Secretary Teresa Hill, Transportation Cabinet Secretary Bill Nighbert, Education Cabinet Secretary Laura Owens, Commerce Secretary George Ward, Budget Director Brad Cowgill and Major General Donald Storm, Adjutant General for Kentucky. Each official read a different book to a class of Glendover students.
Scholastic launched the “Read For” initiative in 1999. In 2006, more than one million children and 24,000 teachers in 34 countries participated in the campaign. The official Web site for Scholastic Read for 2007: Read for Life is www.scholastic.com/readfor2007.
