FRANKFORT, Ky. – First Lady Glenna Fletcher visited Campbell Elementary School in Raceland today to participate in Kentucky Power’s annual “Read to Me Day.”  Mrs. Fletcher read the book chosen for this year’s event, “Munched Up Flower Garden” by author Nancy Kelly Allen, to three classes of 2nd grade students.

“Kentucky Power's ‘Read to Me Day’ is a great community partnership to promote literacy,” said Mrs. Fletcher.  “Reading is the single most essential skill our children need for a successful lifetime of learning.”

This is the third consecutive year Kentucky Power has sponsored “Read to Me Day,” which is held at elementary schools across Eastern Kentucky.  In addition to Mrs. Fletcher, 40 company employees read to students at schools in Floyd, Greenup, Knott, Lawrence and Leslie Counties.

Literacy is one of Mrs. Fletcher’s primary focuses.  She strongly supported the “Read to Achieve” legislation which was passed unanimously by the General Assembly in the spring of 2005.  The Read to Achieve Act was created to focus on reading diagnostic and intensive reading intervention for struggling readers within the state primary program.
