FRANKFORT, Ky. – First Lady Glenna Fletcher, along with representatives from the 2007 National Senior Games, the National Senior Games Association, Humana, and other sponsors, celebrated the “year-away” date last night for the 2007 National Senior Games – The Senior Olympics presented by Humana.

The 2007 National Senior Games will take place this time next year, from June 22, 2007 through July 7, 2007, and is expected to draw 12,000 athletes and 15,000 spectators to the greater Louisville area. Athletes will compete in 18 medal sports, while getting a good taste of Kentucky’s famous hospitality.

First Lady Glenna Fletcher gave introductory remarks last night’s event. The First Lady will serve as the honorary chair of the games’ steering committee.

“The Governor and I are proud to know that the 2007 National Senior Games will take place in Kentucky,” said Mrs. Fletcher. “This event will bring thousands of competitors and spectators from across the country to Kentucky, giving them a chance to experience firsthand Kentucky’s unbridled spirit and Louisville’s well-known hospitality. We encourage Kentuckians who qualify for these games to participate and compete – we want Kentucky to have a strong showing at the events.”

The executive director of the 2007 Senior Games, Ray Hoyt, outlined some of the plans for the event next year, including the competition schedule. “We have the competition schedule ready earlier than ever, which will help athletes plan their trip to the Louisville area next summer,” said Hoyt.

In addition to the First Lady, Louisville Deputy Mayor Rick Johnstone welcomed the games to the state. Bill Bankhead of the National Senior Games Association referred to the Association’s high expectations of having the Games in Louisville: “Louisville will set the stage for taking these games to the next level.”
