Wrote: The Founding of Harman's Station, The Wiley Captivity, History of Kansas and 13 other major works; collaborated with Coulter on History of Kentucky, edited by Kerr. Contributed to journals on ethnology, folklore of Wyandots; prepared only written vocabulary of their language. Died, 1930.

Description For Captain James Estill, gallant soldier and frontiersman. Fought one of bloodiest Indian battles, Estill's Defeat, on March 22, 1782, in what is now Montgomery County. He and 7 of his 25 pioneers were killed in violent combat with a band of marauding Wyandots. The 50th county, formed out of parts of Clark and Madison. Parts of 5 counties were taken from Estill.

Description Aug. 12, 1782, Capt. John Holder and 17 militiamen overtook band of Wyandotte on Great Salt Creek (Licking River) six miles N.E. The Indians had captured two boys, Jones Hoy and Jack Calloway, near Boonesborough. In skirmish that took place Holder lost four men, and being outnumbered he withdrew without the boys. Hoy held captive seven years, Calloway not so long.
