Description: For J. Proctor Knott during term as Governor of Kentucky, 1883-87. Knott was born Marion Co., Ky., 1830. Missouri Legislature, 1851-59. Atty. Gen., 1859-60. Returned Ky., 1863. U.S. Congress six terms. Famous as humorous and satirical orator. In the 1891 Const. Conv. took lead in keeping capital at Frankfort. First Law Dean, Centre College, 1891-1901. Died in 1911.

Governor's Home Site

Location: 1 mi. S. of Lebanon, KY 49

Description: J. Proctor Knott, Governor of Kentucky, 1883-1887, lived at this site until 1902, when house burned. He then gave this land to be used for chautauquas. These gatherings combined entertainment, education, and religion. For 27 years, 1906 to 1932, they flourished here. Central Kentucky Chautauqua Association formed, 1906. Renamed Proctor Knott Chautauqua Association in 1908.

John B. Castleman-Soldier

Location: Near Gen. John B. Castleman monument, Cherokee Rd., Louisville

Description: Castleman, one of Morgan's men, led attempt in 1864 to free CSA prisoners at Camp Morton. He was imprisoned until end of the war, exiled, then pardoned by President Johnson. A native of Fayette Co., he came here in 1867. Colonel, Louisville Legion, lst Regt., Ky. State Guard, reorganized in 1878. Served with lst Regt. as Brigadier General in Puerto Rico, 1898-99.

(Reverse) John B. Castleman-Citizen - After the Civil War, Castleman studied law and graduated from University of Louisville in 1868. Known as Father of Louisville Park System, he was responsible for Cherokee, Shawnee, Iroquois and Central parks. Castleman also organized and was president of American Saddle Horse Assn., 1892. Appointed Adjutant General by both governors Knott and Beckham.

Description: J. Proctor Knott, 1830-1911. Born in this county. Missouri Legislature, 1851-59; Att. Gen., 1859-60. Came back here, 1863. U.S. Congress six terms, became famous as statesman, satirist, Governor of Kentucky, 1883-87. In 1891 Constitutional Convention, led keeping capital at Frankfort. First Dean Centre College Law School, 1894-1901. Knott County named for him.

Raywick

Location: Between school & church, Raywick, KY 84

Description: Settlers here, 1778, included Henry Prather and James and John Ray. After marriage of Lloyd Ray and Nancy Wickliffe in 1811, town known as Raywick. Gov. J. Proctor Knott was born nearby. His grandfather, Thos. P. Knott, came in 1796 and taught first school in area. His father, Joseph P., was surveyor of Marion County. State legislature established Raywick in 1838.
