Alvan Drew School

Description: The Methodist-sponsored Alvan Drew school was here, 1913-1947. Started by missionary Mrs. M. O. Everett, and named for supporter of rural education, it began as a one-room school and later added a student-operated farm, blacksmith and print shops, grist and planing mills. Closed after 1947 fire. Dessie Scott Children's Home, formerly in Breathitt Co., moved here, 1950.

Hazel Green Academy

Description: Organized 1880 by J. Taylor Day, William O. Mize and Green Berry Swango. Only college preparatory school serving this area for years. Many of its graduates have gone on to prominence.



Swango Springs Spa
(Marker Number: 920)

Location: Hazel Green schoolyard, KY 191

Description: Traditionally, healing properties of mineral water of a spring here discovered by owner when treating her pet dog for mange. Its use by humans spread and by 1895 three hotels and many boarding houses were hosts to people from all over America. Fire destroyed largest hotel, 1910. Visitors to resort dropped off. Mineral water bottled and widely shipped until 1943.

Swift's Silver Camp

Description: John Swift's fabulous journals report silver operations in East Kentucky. References to ships on the Spanish Seas and to coinage of silver in this area with six trips from Atlantic Coast to this region, 1761 to 1769, is an unsolved mystery. Intrepid searchers have found no trace of cache or mine. One Swift camp reputed to have been on site of this Court House.



USA Gens. Morgan CSA

Description: General George W. Morgan's 9,000 USA force, cut off from supplies at Cumberland Gap, retreated 200 mi. in 16 days to Greenup on Ohio River. It camped here Sept. 23, 1862. Gen. John Hunt Morgan's CSA men, on tragic last raid into Kentucky, moved by here. After two battles in Mt. Sterling, they met defeat at Cynthiana, June 12, 1864, and retreated to Va. Map other side.

Wolfe County, 1860

Location: Campton, Courthouse lawn, KY 15

Description: Formed from parts of Breathitt, Morgan, Owsley, and Powell counties, it was the 110th created. Named for Nathaniel Wolfe, 1810-65, a native of Virginia, reported to be first graduate of University of Virginia. In Kentucky, he was Commonwealth's Attorney for Jefferson County, for 13 years, 1839-52. Member of State Legislature, 1853-55, 1859-63.
