LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The theme for the 2006 Republic Bank Derby Festival Pegasus Parade is  “Once Upon a Toy” – a tribute to some of the world’s best-known toy figures from several generations. The Pegasus Parade, the Derby Festival’s oldest event, will feature approximately 100 units on Thursday, May 4 starting at 5 p.m.

Festival President and CEO Mike Berry said the theme resonates with everyone who has fond memories of their favorite childhood toys, and this year’s parade should rekindle thoughts of those carefree days. “In keeping with the theme of the event, many of the parade units will feature original tributes to some of the better-known toy figures. I can’t wait to see colorful creations that will take part,” Berry said.

Sponsoring organizations have used the theme in building their floats. The floats compete for various awards based on originality, eye appeal, theme representation, animation, attention to detail and enthusiasm. Marching bands use the theme to help with music selection, and it is the basis of costume and concept design for the other marching units.

The annual spectacle marches west on Broadway from Campbell Street to Ninth Street.
The 2006 Parade will feature at least 10 floats, many of them built by the employees and members of the organizations sponsoring them. The sponsors include KDF Festival Stars, Second Chance@Life, Red Baron Pizza, Norton Healthcare, Kentucky State Fair Board, The Fillies Inc., Ford Motor Company – Kentucky Truck Plant, Kosair Charities, Miss Black USA Scholarship Program and Grand Lodge of Kentucky.

Spectators will have an opportunity to preview each float at the Republic Bank Derby Festival Parade Preview on Tuesday, May 2, at the Kentucky Fair & Exposition Center, in the new South Wing C addition. This event will offer a taste of the entire parade. Marching bands, equestrian units, VIP’s, and giant inflatable balloons will join the floats on display for the indoor tour “inside” a parade. Admission requires a 2006 Pegasus Pin.

Tickets for the Parade are on sale at the Kentucky Derby Festival office at 1001 S. Third Street or by calling the BellSouth Derby Festival Hotline at 502-540-1127. Ticket prices are $9 for bleacher seats, $11 for chair seating and $26 for review stand seats. There is also free viewing along the route thanks to the sponsorship of Republic Bank & Trust Company.

The first Derby Festival event in 1956, the Pegasus Parade remains a community favorite. Tickets sell out quickly and thousands of families come downtown to enjoy the parade in free viewing areas sponsored by Republic Bank.

The Pegasus Parade is one of the more than seventy events produced by the Derby Festival. The Derby Festival is an independent community organization supported by 4,000 volunteers and 350 businesses and civic groups. It entertains more than 1.5 million people in a two-week period. This involvement has made the Festival the largest event in Kentucky and one of the leading community celebrations in the world.
