Bowling Green Receives National Preservation Award
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- The City of Bowling Green has been designated as one of 2006’s Dozen Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Bowling Green is the first city in Kentucky to be chosen, and is in the company of past winners that include Key West, Fla., Galveston, Texas and others.
The Dozen Distinctive Destinations award is given out to 12 cities each year by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Communities that are selected for the award offer Americans enjoyable natural, historic, aesthetic, recreational, and cultural experiences. Each location must have a dynamic downtown, commitment to historic preservation, interesting architecture, cultural diversity, an economic base of locally owned small businesses, and walking access for residents and visitors.
"Bowling Green blends an appreciation for our architectural history with a commitment to the future,” Mayor Elaine Walker said. “Historic sites such as our Fountain Square Park and historic L&N Depot, unique natural resources such as Lost River Cave, and world-class attractions such as the National Corvette Museum have something for everyone. That is why being named one of the country's Dozen Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation is so important. We know this will spread our message to citizens across our nation, that Bowling Green, Ky. is a great place to visit."
The Bowling Green Area Convention & Visitors Bureau is featuring a VIP Heritage Tourism Trip for Two to Bowling Green that will be given away in honor of the Dozen Distinctive Destinations Award. “We thought this would be a perfect tie in to promote Bowling Green being selected,” said Vicki Fitch, Executive Director at the Bowling Green Area Convention & Visitors Bureau.
