Ashland Events Mark Black History Month and Lincoln Bicentennial
ASHLAND, Ky. – The Ashland area is marking Black History Month and the Abraham Lincoln Birth Bicentennial this month with several events scheduled to take place at the Highlands Museum and Discovery Center and the historic Paramount Arts Center.
On Wednesday Feb. 20, Kentucky's Lincoln Story will be presented at the Highlands Museum and outside in the traveling Historymobile from the Kentucky Historical Society. Intended for adults and children from Grade 3 up, the presentation will last from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Join KET and the Kentucky Historical Society for a presentation on the 16th president’s ties to the state where he was born in 1809. On Friday Feb. 22, at 7 p.m., A Night at the Apollo will unfold on the main stage at Ashland’s Paramount Arts Center. Experience New York’s famed Apollo Theater Ashland-style when area residents are given the opportunity to showcase their talent in music, song, poetry and drama. Admission is $5 for adults, $1 for children under 2. Applications for entrants are available from the Highlands Museum or www.highlandsmuseum.com. $250 first prize; $150 second prize, and $100 third prize. For more information call 606-324-3175. On Thursday Feb. 28, at 7 p.m., Kentucky Chautauqua and the Kentucky Humanities Council will present Margaret Garner: Death Before Slavery at the Highlands Museum and Discovery Center, 1620 Winchester Ave. Portrayed by Erma Bush of Louisville, Margaret Garner was a fugitive slave who in 1856 killed her child rather than have her taken back into slavery. Follow the Drinking Gourd (intended for students Grade K-4) is being presented through Feb. 29 at the Highlands Museum and Discovery Center, 1620 Winchester Ave., Ashland. Make a constellation in the classroom and then visit STARLAB at the Highlands Museum for a slide presentation based on the book, Follow the Drinking Gourd, by Jeanette Winters. The book and presentation explain how fugitive slaves on the Underground Railroad followed the stars to freedom. Call 606-329-8888 for scheduling.
