Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes is reminding Kentucky cities that a deadline to reclassify their municipalities is approaching.

Pursuant to the Municipal Reclassification Reform Act, passed in the regular session of the 2014 Kentucky General Assembly, cities must file written notice of reclassification with the Office of the Secretary of State before Jan. 1, 2015.

“Many Kentucky cities have already complied with the statute,” Grimes said. “It is my hope that all cities that have not done so already will fulfill the requirement before the Jan. 1 deadline.”

The law, which is codified at KRS 81.005, provides that any city that fails to comply with the filing requirement will be barred from receiving state moneys until the notice of reclassification is submitted. About 90% of Kentucky’s 422 cities have submitted reclassification notices.

For cities’ convenience, the Secretary of State’s office sent a Notice of City Reclassification form to each city earlier this year.  The form is also available at
