On May 9, 2012, Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes presented a $500 cash award to Mackenzie Brunson, a sixth-grader at Northern Middle School in Pulaski County, for winning first place in Grimes’ office’s annual slogan contest. The slogan contest was created in 1988 to inspire students to be active and informed citizens, with particular emphasis on election-related issues.

Brunson’s slogan, “Voting! Kentucky’s fuel of democracy.” garnered nearly 75% of the votes in an online poll. Grimes visited Brunson in the classroom of teacher Jeannie Smith. She congratulated Brunson on her achievement and thanked her for helping spread the important message that, “Part of living in a democratic society is participating in the process of making decisions that affect us, and voting is what makes that system work.”

Grimes, who is the Commonwealth’s chief advocate for civic education, reminded Brunson and her classmates that, “if we do not vote, we fail to have our voices heard, forfeiting the benefits of living in a democracy.” She encouraged them all to stay informed and involved as they reach voting age.
