On April 20, 2012, Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes presented a $200 cash award to Melody Decker, an eighth-grader at Union County Middle School in Morganfield, for winning third place in Grimes’ office’s annual slogan contest. The slogan contest was created in 1988 to inspire students to be active and informed citizens, with particular emphasis on election-related issues.

Decker’s slogan, “You determine Kentucky’s future, make the right choice. Vote!” garnered the third most votes in an online poll. Grimes presented Decker’s award at a school-wide ceremony. She congratulated Decker on her achievement and thanked her for helping spread the message that “voting is an important responsibility with serious consequences. We must therefore be not just voters, but informed voters.”

Grimes, who is the Commonwealth’s chief advocate for civic education, reminded Decker and other students that, “in a democratic society, voting is how we make ourselves heard.” She encouraged them all to stay informed and involved as they reach voting age.
