Coil Pottery Workshop at Wickliffe Mounds July 19
WICKLIFFE, Ky. -- Wickliffe Mounds State Historic Site will offer an advanced coil pottery workshop on July 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. CST.
Coil pottery construction is an ancient method developed by Native Americans. Wet tempered clay is rolled out and fashioned into coils. The coils are then carefully added, one above the other and slightly overlapping. Each coiled layer is firmly pinched to the layer beneath to make it adhere. After the pot is built, the drying, polishing, decorating, and firing are the final stages of coiled pottery.
Fain Russell, program specialist, will conduct the hands-on workshop. He has extensive knowledge of primitive pottery construction using local clays. All materials are furnished. The workshop format is for adults and older teens. Registration is required, and the workshop fee is $15.00 per person. Contact Wickliffe Mounds at 270-335-3681 to register for the class.
Wickliffe Mounds State Historic Site features a museum, gift shop, trail, and picnic area. The park is located at 94 Green Street, Highway 51/60 in Wickliffe, Ballard County, Ky., along the Great River Road. It is an important Native American archaeological site and a unique part of Kentucky’s history.
