DAWSON SPRINGS, Ky. – Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park is inviting photographers of all skill levels to participate in the annual Fall Photography Weekend October 17-19.
The weekend consists of a contest with point & shoot, intermediate, and masters divisions, evening programs, critiques and an award ceremony. Bring your own camera. Registration is $30. Register by October 11 and receive a $5 discount. Workshop participants are eligible for a 10% discount on lodging at the park.

The evening presentations, “Life Through the Viewfinder: Seeing Beyond the Obvious,” and “A Painterly Approach to Photography,” will take place at 7:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The presenters will be Brian Wilkes of Marion, Ky. and Keith A. Barker of Wilmore, Ky.
Life Through the Viewfinder: Seeing Beyond the Obvious (Oct. 17, 2008):
Why do we photograph? What triggers the desire to raise the camera to our eye? What standards should we use to pick the best among all our photos? Accuracy? Clarity? There is always plenty of talk about how photographs are to be taken, but there is less about the importance of considering why photographs might be made and chosen. There is plenty to look at, but what is being seen? Using a wide variety of examples, a deliberate approach to photography will be considered, with the goal of making photographs of just about anything go beyond merely depicting what is in front of the camera.
About the instructor: Having worked as a commercial photographer, photojournalist, and graphic designer, Keith A. Barker's work is as diverse as his experience. He uses landscape, architecture, portraiture and travel photography to explore the experience of life. He is an Associate Professor teaching Photography and Graphic Design for the Art Department at Asbury College in Wilmore, Ky.
A Painterly Approach to Landscape Photography (Oct. 18, 2008): The pioneers of photography had to look to painting for their inspiration, and Brian Wilkes shows why that’s still a good idea. The elements of composition and design apply across all visual arts. From da Vinci to Renoir to van Gogh, from the Hudson Valley School to the Surrealists and up to the present day, trends in painting influence contemporary photography. Learn to look at paintings in a new way, and bring that new vision to your photographs. The same principles apply to cityscapes, and can even improve your portrait photography.
About the instructor: Photojournalist and former news anchor, Brian Wilkes has photographed landscape and cityscapes in Italy, France, Russia, Arctic Greenland and Peru as well as the eastern United States. His work has appeared in national magazines. He brings his degree in art education to the table as he transfers the skills and principles of other arts to photography. Wilkes teaches frequent photography courses at the Crittenden County Ed-Tech Training Center in Marion, KY.
Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park features a lodge, cottages, campgrounds, and the Clifty Creek Restaurant. Activities range from boating to fishing and golf.
The resort is 20 miles northwest of Hopkinsville, on KY 109 North. From the Western Kentucky Parkway, exit at Dawson Springs and take KY 109 south.
