Kentucky State Parks Offer Fishing Events For Children
FRANKFORT, Ky. – With summer approaching, it’s time to get out the fishing gear and drop a line.
Kentucky State Parks provide many excellent fishing opportunities, especially for youngsters. The first weekend in June is part of National Fishing Week and in Kentucky, fishing is free and no license is required during the weekend (Saturday and Sunday). Children 15 and younger do not need a license at anytime. All other fishing regulations remain in effect.
The Kentucky State Parks have several fishing events in June and July for children. Here’s a list of the special fishing events planned across the state at parks. For more details, visit www.parks.ky.gov or call the park you plan to visit.
Kenlake State Resort Park, Aurora -- Fishing For Fun – June 2
Fishing for Fun Day at the park marina on Kentucky Lake. Fishing starts at 8 a.m. and there will be prizes given. 800-325-0143.
Green River Lake State Park, Campbellsville -- Kids’ Outdoor Day – June 2
Include fishing, archery, trap shooting, hikes, boating and more. Door prizes will be awarded. All events are free, including lunch. 270-465-8255.
John James Audubon State Park, Henderson – National Fishing Week – June 3-11
The park will have special activities including fishing contest and paddleboat races this week. Related programs offered throughout the summer. Call 270-826-2247 for information.
Barren River Lake State Resort Park, Glasgow—Kids’ Fishing Derby -- June 9
The fishing derby will offer door prizes and presented in cooperation with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. Participants are encouraged to bring a fishing pole if they have one, but fishing poles and bait will be available. Starts at 9 a.m. 800-325-0057.
Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park, Burkesville—Kids’ Fishing Derby – June 9
Calling all future fisherman and women, kids 12 & under (with adult supervision) learn how to fish at our Kid's Fishing Derby. There will be a "Casting Contest, "Big Fish Contest" and "I Caught a Fish" contest. Door prizes will be given away. Contact: Jamie Avery. 800-325-2282.
Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park, Dawson Springs – Kids’ Fishing Derby – June 9
Expert help and advice will be available to help beginners and prizes will be awarded. Advance registration is required by June 6, and participation will be limited to 50 children ages 5 to 15. To register, contact Becky Clark at RebeccaE.Clark@ky.gov or 1-800-325-1711.
Greenbo Lake State Resort Park, Greenup – Fishing Derby – June 9
Sponsored by the Greenup County 4-H and WalMart. Registration is 8-8:30 a.m. Prizes will be offered in age categories from under 4 to age 16. Refreshments will be served. 800-325-0083.
Buckhorn Lake State Resort Park, Buckhorn – WalMart All American Fishing Derby – June 16
From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Open to all children ages 16 and under. Register at the marina. Prizes given. 800-325-0058.
General Butler State Resort Park, Carrollton – WalMart Fishing Derby --June 23
Come to Butler Lake (Beachfront) starting at 10 a.m. for kids 12 years and under. 866-462-8853.
Greenbo Lake State Resort Park -- 3rd Annual Greenbo Junior Fishing Tournament -- July 28
Greenbo Lake State Resort Park at Greenup. Prizes will be awarded for biggest fish and most fish caught in age groups 15 years and under. The tournament starts at 10 a.m. 800-325-0083.
