Greenbo Seminar Will Teach Techniques of Cemetery Genealogy
GREENUP, Ky. – Observing the details on gravestones and their surrounding cemeteries can reveal much information about our ancestors. Greenbo State Resort Park will host a cemetery iconology workshop on Jan. 31, 2009 to provide you with techniques for studying family genealogy as revealed by their burial places.
Conducted by Gaylord Cooper of Eastern Kentucky Genealogy Associates, the Greenbo seminar will explore what cemeteries and headstones can teach us about family relationships, occupations, religious affiliations, social organizations and causes of death. Cooper will instruct participants in how to observe the placement, composition, size and thickness of gravestones to learn about family genealogy.
Cooper, who holds two certificates in genealogy from Brigham Young University and one from the National Genealogy Society, has published articles on cemetery iconology in regional, national and international magazines.
The seminar will be held on Saturday Jan. 31 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a lunch break from noon to 1 p.m. Registration fee for the workshop is $5 per person. Participants will receive handouts and a coupon from Motes Books for a discount on the book “Stories in Stone.” For more information, contact Paul Verespy at 606-473-7324 or 800-325-0083.
