Parks Department Practices "Turf Love"
Kentucky state park golf courses will soon look and play better, thanks to a $1 million investment in mowing equipment.
The courses have been maintained with equipment that in some cases is older than Tiger Woods, said Parks Commissioner George Ward.
“We have some mowers that were purchased in 1972,” Ward noted. “They were fine for their time, but the technology has changed radically in the past 30 years.”
As part of the administration’s $35 million investment in improving state parks, all 13 18-hole courses and eight nine-hole courses are getting updated mowers. The results will be visible to golfers.
“The equipment will add definition and more precise contouring to the roughs, fairways, and areas surrounding the greens and tees,” notes Dan Strohmeier, director of golf.
The department also bought greens mowers, bunker-raking equipment and turf utility vehicles used to transport personnel and small cargo, Strohmeier said.
Some machines already have been delivered, with the rest scheduled to be put into service in the next month or so.
The new equipment is a prudent investment, notes Commissioner Ward. The department’s nationally recognized courses – including three honored with Golf Digest awards – are an excellent draw for out of state visitors. Improving the courses’ appearance can only make the courses more marketable.
