Frankfort, Ky.--Winter’s gray skies are dwindling.   As temperatures rise, daydreams increase about getting outside for new adventures and family fun over spring, summer and fall.  Kentucky State Parks has a plan that combines exploration, a bit of mental exercise and rewards for teams of two to six members to tackle over the coming months.  Get ready to answer some riddles, see new sites and create memories that will last a lifetime.

For the fifth year, Family Adventure Quests (FAQs), combine trivia questions, history and loads of fun with a bit of scavenger hunt challenge for teams of friends and family.  Teams that track 25 quest challenges on land, over the Internet and by object, are rewarded with Unbridled Spirit gift cards valued at $85.  Teams that successfully answer 20 questions receive cards worth $50.  Team results and photos are submitted to the state parks office in Frankfort for the final tally.

Registration information and requests for the FAQ booklet which includes riddles and questions about historic and natural landmarks, are at www.parks.ky.gov or phone 1-800-255-PARK or 502-564-2172.   Some challenges require “proof” with digital photo documentation of team members with the landmark.  Other quests can be answered during a park visit or by on-line research.

Past “questors” are wildly enthusiastic about their FAQ experience as evidenced by their remarks and photos from their adventure.  “Great time; tons of fun and adventure; we’ll be back; our family had lots of fun!” are a few testimonials.  To see photos of happy teams at www.parks.ky.gov/adventure/ and click on the photo gallery tab.

FAQs satisfy a growing interest in adventure tourism and outdoor play and as families and friends look for new ideas to celebrate holidays or for vacations and weekend getaways.  FAQs provide a ready-made plan, scorecard and reward for exploring Kentucky’s natural beauty and history evident throughout the system.   Book a reservation at a lodge or cottage at a participating park for a convenient getaway surrounded by Mother Nature.   Or shake out those camping legs by staying out under the stars at one of about 3,000 campsites at 32 different park locations.  Reservations can be made for your choice of stay through the state park Web site at http://parks.ky.gov/.

A $15 registration fee for each FAQ team includes a commemorative backpack, a water bottle to keep handy along the quest and the booklet to record each step of the team’s success.  Photos recorded to a CD must be submitted along with the booklet and become property of Kentucky State Parks.  Note that some quest challenges can only be accomplished between Memorial Day and Labor Day so planning is part of the fun.

Teams can begin any time—what a great idea for spring break--but to be eligible for prizes, completed quests must be received by Kentucky State Parks no later than Dec. 1, 2010.  Checks for registration should be made payable to Kentucky State Parks.

Kentucky Unbridled Spirit gift cards are redeemable at the Kentucky Historical Society’s 1792 Gift Shop in Frankfort, the Kentucky Horse Park gift shop north of Lexington, the Kentucky Artisan Center in Berea or any of the gift shops located at Kentucky State Parks or historic sites.  They are also good toward the cost of lodging, food, golf and pro shops and other park activities.
