COLUMBUS, Ky. -- Sitting high on the bluffs of the Mississippi River is a Kentucky State Park rich in history.

 

Columbus-Belmont State Park campground has 38 spacious campsites with water and electric hookups and some of these sites have sewer drops. The campground now offers two camping trailers and a log cabin for rent.

 

Each camper sleeps six. Each has a full bed in bedroom, bunk beds, and a couch that makes a bed. It has a bathroom with shower, and a stove, refrigerator and microwave.  The log cabin sleeps two. It has a bunk bed, table and chairs. Both have heat and air conditioning.

 

Guests must furnish bedding and utensils. Wi-Fi is available. The campground is open year-round, with limited facilities in winter.

Columbus-Belmont State Park is a Civil War site.  Fortifications built by the Confederates in 1861 later were occupied by the Union Army until the end of the war. Union commander Ulysses S. Grant, who later became president, led his first battle here. The park was established in 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. It is on a National Scenic Byway and it is a Great River Road Interpretative Center. Columbus-Belmont State Park is also on the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail.

 

The park will host Civil War Days Oct. 7-9 and commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Belmont.

 

The park is located 36 miles southwest of Paducah on KY 58 and KY 123/80 in Columbus, Ky.
