HENDERSON, Ky.John James Audubon State Park is the recipient of the National Dorothy Mullen Arts and Humanities Award for its presentation of the annual Audubon Arts & Music Festival.

The award, which also recognized Audubon arts educator Kim McGrew, is from the National Recreation and Park Association and is for the most innovative and effective arts and humanities programs across the country. Five awards are presented annually based on the size of the community. McGrew attended the group’s recent meeting in Minneapolis to receive the award.

The arts festival serves special needs children from five western Kentucky counties – Henderson, Daviess, Hopkins, Union and Webster. About 500 students attend the festival, held in September each year. McGrew has organized the event each of the last 10 years.

“The festival is a really exciting time for the students,” McGrew said. “Students are able to experience and express themselves through visual arts, music, dance and other art forms.”

John James Audubon State Park has a museum, nature center, cottages, campground, hiking trails, 9-hole golf course, picnic shelters and year-round programming. The park is located on U.S. 41 in the northern outskirts of Henderson, half a mile south of the U.S. 41 bridge over the Ohio River. For information, call 1-270-826-2247.
