Newtown Pike Extension project competes for national ‘People’s Choice Award’
Public may vote online until Oct. 14
FRANKFORT, Ky. (Oct. 3, 2011) – The first completed phase of the Newtown Pike Extension project in Lexington is a finalist in the People’s Choice Award category of the America’s Transportation Awards competition.
The People’s Choice Award will be decided by popular vote of the general public. Online voting is under way and will continue through Oct. 14, 2011 at www.AmericasTransportationAward.org. Members of the public may vote as often as desired.
The award will be presented Oct. 16 at the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Annual Meeting in Detroit.
AASHTO, AAA, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce cosponsor America’s Transportation Awards, the annual competition to recognize the best transportation projects in America using three main categories – On Time, Under Budget, and Innovative Management.
The Newtown Pike project won in the “On Time” category for a project costing less than $25 million. The improved roadway was opened to traffic on Sept. 1, 2010 – two weeks prior to the opening of the World Equestrian Games.
When all phases of the $16 million project are completed, the Newtown Pike will form a direct connection from Interstates 75 and 64 on the north side of Lexington to the University of Kentucky campus. Plans for such a connection can be found dating to the 1930s.
The Newtown Pike project is currently fifth in the voting, trailing projects in Washington, Florida, Kansas and Michigan.
