Highway crews mopping up from snow storm
Motorists still encouraged to reduce speed, be alert for ice, highway equipment
FRANKFORT, Ky. (Jan. 13, 2012) – Kentucky Transportation Cabinet highway crews are winding up the plowing and treating of roads and bridges after the first significant snow storm of the winter moved across the Commonwealth.
In most areas, crews are concentrating on reported problem spots, primarily in eastern Kentucky, the greater Lexington area and a corridor from Bowling Green to Somerset. In western Kentucky, most of the activity amounts to patrolling. Plowing continues through Friday afternoon in Jackson County and Leslie County.
KYTC crews work as long as necessary to keep roadways open in winter. The cabinet’s vehicle and equipment fleet includes 1,065 snow plows. In addition, the cabinet can call on more than 350 snow-removal contractors.
The cabinet reminds motorists:
• Exercise greater caution when driving. Slow down!
• Be prepared for slick conditions.
• Give a wide berth to snow plows and other heavy highway equipment.
• Eliminate distractions while behind the wheel.
