The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Announces the Winners of the 2005/2006 Adopt-A-Highway Poster Contest

FRANKFORT, KY (November 3, 2005) - Students from Muhlenberg North High School, Williamstown Junior-Senior High School and Williamstown Elementary have been declared the 1st place winners in the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s 2005/2006 Adopt-A-Highway Poster Contest today in Frankfort. The Cabinet received a record 1,897 entries from elementary, middle and high schools across the Commonwealth. 

Each winner of this year’s contest will receive a savings bond. The 1st place winners will also receive a framed print of their poster.  Calendars featuring the winners’ posters will be presented at a luncheon ceremony held at the Governor’s Mansion on December 13, 2005. 

The purpose of the contest is to increase environmental awareness among children, to educate children about the devastating effects of litter, and to change attitudes and behaviors about littering. 

The winners are as follows:

Age 6-9

1st place          Lindsay Brubaker                    Williamstown Elementary School

 Age 10-13

1st place          Cleo Northcutt                        Williamstown Junior-Senior High School

3rd place          Allison Beeson                                    Spencer County Middle School

Age 14-17

1st place          Adam Vincent                         Muhlenberg North High School

2nd place         Emily Larison                          Simon Kenton High School

3rd place          Brooke Kyle                            Pendleton County High School

The panel of judges consisted of Transportation Commissioner of Highways Marc Williams, Kentucky State University Professor Reba Rye, Jodi Whitaker of the Governor’s Office, Executive Director Doug Hogan, Office of Public Affairs for the Transportation Cabinet; and Miranda Thacker, Statewide Adopt-A-Highway Coordinator.  “We had so many excellent entries that it was really hard to pick the winners,” said Commissioner Marc Williams.

 The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet urges students and teachers to get an early start on the 2006/2007 Poster Contest. The Cabinet will begin accepting entries on January 1, 2006. The entries will close on September 30, 2006.
