Gov. Steve Beshear appoints State Highway Engineer
Steve Waddle, 22-year cabinet veteran, was serving as acting State Highway Engineer
FRANKFORT, Ky. (Sept. 15, 2010) – Steve Waddle, a civil engineer who has spent a 22-year career with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, has been appointed State Highway Engineer by Gov. Steve Beshear.
Waddle has been acting State Highway Engineer since October 2009. As chief engineer for the Department of Highways, he oversees the department’s three offices – Project Development, Project Delivery and Preservation, and Highway Safety – which together contain 14 divisions.
“The post of State Highway Engineer is one of the most important positions of any administration, and Steve Waddle has done an outstanding job while serving in an acting capacity,” Gov. Beshear said. “This permanent appointment will further enhance our management team at the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.”
Waddle joined the cabinet in 1988, a year after graduation from the University of Kentucky College of Engineering, where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering.
Early assignments included resident engineer for reconstruction of the US 127 corridor through Franklin and Anderson counties. He was the Division of Construction’s field liaison for the US 119, US 23 and US 460 corridor projects in eastern Kentucky and for construction of the William H. Harsha Bridge over the Ohio River at Maysville.
Waddle was appointed deputy state highway engineer for project development in March 2009. He was director of the Division of Construction Procurement at the time and continued in the dual role through June 2009. Secretary Hancock said Waddle would retain project development responsibilities as State Highway Engineer.
“One of Steve’s real strengths is his years of experience in highway construction,” said Transportation Secretary Mike Hancock. “His permanent appointment as State Highway Engineer is important for continuity of leadership in the cabinet.”
“I am grateful to Governor Beshear and Secretary Hancock for their confidence in me, and I look forward to helping continue the important work of the cabinet to build and maintain a modern, safer transportation system,” Waddle said.
