LEXINGTON, KY (April 1, 2005)—The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Department of Highways announces that Faulkner Construction will be closing the Leestown Road (US 421) Bridge on Monday, April 4, 2005 at 6:00 AM.

The bridge, which spans the Norfolk-Southern Railroad, will be closed between Forbes Road and Cox Street for a period of 99 days. "This project is extremely vital to the traffic flow in Lexington. We are working with the contractor, Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, property owners, utility companies, railroad, and most importantly the travelling public to put this project on the fast track and keep it on schedule," said Amos Hubbard, Chief District Engineer for District Seven. In addition, Price Road will be closed at Leestown Road; however, local traffic will still have access to the Palumbo Lumber area from downtown as well as access to Clyde Street from the Meadowthorpe area.

The closure is necessary to allow for the removal and replacement of the existing bridge. An official detour has been signed utilizing Newtown Pike and New Circle Road. Pedestrians and Cyclist are strictly prohibited within the Work Zone Area. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will maintain a website throughout the duration of the project to provide information to and receive comments and concerns from motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists. "Feedback on how we're doing is important to us as we carry out Governor Fletcher's goal of improving the transportation system for the citizens of Fayette County and the Commonwealth of Kentucky," said Mr. Hubbard. For project information or to submit your comments or concerns please visit or call 859-246-2355.

Faulkner Construction, LLC of Louisville, Kentucky is performing the $9.4 million dollar project. Upon completion, the bridge replacement project will provide for improved sight distance at the Price Road intersection, 6-foot shoulders across the bridge, and a bi-directional left turn lane on the Clyde Street side of the project. The project has an overall completion date of December 2005.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet asks that motorists use extreme caution and utilize safe driving habits throughout this area.
