The Taylor Mill Road Widening Project in

Kenton County Begins

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet wants to inform the public that the first section of the Taylor Mill Road (KY 16) widening project has begun in Kenton County.  The project area stretches 1.2 miles from Klette Road (KY 2047) to Sunbrite Drive.

“This road widening project, when completed, will improve traffic flow as well as enhance the intersections along the Taylor Mill Road,” said Rob Hans, Chief District Engineer for Department of Highways District 6, in Covington.

L-M Asphalt Partners Ltd., of Lexington, Ky., was awarded the contract for $9.8 million.

This is the first of four sections being reconstructed to form a new, 4.2-mile roadway. It will have five lanes, that includes a continuous center turning lane in some areas and raised grass median in others. It also will have curbs, gutters and 7-foot-wide sidewalks.  The alignments and safety at the Senor Road and Hands Pike intersections will be improved in this phase.

Construction will begin the week of April 4.  This phase has extensive utility relocation work as well.  Two lanes of traffic will be maintained on KY 16 throughout the construction project except for isolated flagging.  Senor Road and Hands Pike will each be closed for 30 days for needed construction.  Details for closures will be provided later.

Construction on a second section will begin this summer from I-275 to Blackstone Court.  This section has an estimated $6.8 million construction cost.

The first section between Klette Road and Sunbrite Drive is scheduled to be completed in spring 2012.
