Transportation Enhancement Check Presented to the City of Burlington and Boone County
Gov. Fletcher awards Transportation Enhancement
Funds totaling $352,062 to the City of Burlington
FRANKFORT, KY –(August 18, 2005)—Representatives of Governor Ernie Fletcher’s office and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet today awarded a check from Transportation Enhancement funds totaling $352,062 to the City of Burlington.
The funding is for sidewalk improvements to Historic Burlington.
“By awarding these funds to the City of Burlington, we are fulfilling the Fletcher administration’s primary mission which is to improve economic development and the quality of life for the citizens of the Commonwealth,” said Bill Nighbert, acting Transportation secretary.
The Transportation Enhancement fund will help provide a pedestrian system along the streets in and around the Burlington Historic District. It replaces 2,850 feet of existing, substandard and unsafe sidewalk, as well as adding 4,347 feet of new sidewalk. Street lighting and crosswalk improvements are included to provide safe street crossings. It also includes a pedestrian bridge over Allen Fork Creek along KY 338.
“I want to recognize and give special thanks to the local officials in Burlington, especially Judge Executive Gary Moore and the Boone County Fiscal Court, for their dedication and commitment to this project. There is no question that these preservation projects help the program’s goal of strengthening the cultural and aesthetic aspects of Kentucky’s transportation system,” said Cory Meadows, executive director of the Transportation Enhancement Program.
The Transportation Enhancement program was created by federal legislation in 1991 to offer states funding opportunities to expand transportation choices and increase recreational access. Communities may also use TE funds to contribute toward the revitalization of local and regional economies by restoring historic buildings, renovating streetscapes or providing transportation museums and visitors centers.
