Construction will Provide many Benefits for Community

Covington, Ky. (December 5, 2007) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet would like to notify the public that the North Bend Road (KY 237) widening project has begun in Boone County.  The 3.6 mile section will begin at Litton/Medical Arts Drive, south of the I-275 interchange, continuing north to Kara Lane.

Central Rock Mineral Co. LLC of Lexington, Kentucky was awarded the low bid contract for $23 million.

“We are glad to see the North Bend Road project begin construction” said Tom Schomaker, Chief District Engineer for KYTC District 6.   “This widening project will not only help to alleviate traffic congestion for motorists, but it will also provide bike lanes and multi-use pathways that will allow healthier travel options for people living in this community.”

This project has many features that will provide both safety and traffic flow benefits to the North Bend Road area.  The bridge over I-275 will receive a new deck overlay.  There will be 5 lanes, plus turn lanes in the area of I-275/KY 237 interchange to help move traffic volumes more smoothly.  At the intersection of KY 237 and Cardinal Drive, a roundabout will be built.  Roundabouts eliminate the need for traffic signals.  Traffic will be able to move continuously and more smoothly by entering right into the roundabout and exiting right.

From the Global Way/Tanner Road intersection north, North Bend Road will be widened to three lanes.  The vertical and horizontal alignment will be improved and provide safer travel.  A Park and Ride facility for 100 cars will be built across from Cardinal Drive.  A second roundabout will be built at the intersection of KY 237 and the Graves Road intersection.  A 4’ wide bike lane and 8’ multi-use pathways will also be included along this project.

Boone County Judge Executive, Gary Moore said, “I am extremely excited that KYTC has issued the contract for the reconstruction of North Bend Road.  When this process began many people projected that reconstruction would not be accomplished until 2012 at best.”  He continued by saying, “Boone County Fiscal Court contributed one million dollars to expedite the design for this project.  By doing so, our residents will benefit from this project several years early.”

The project anticipated completion date is Fall 2009.
