Newly realigned KY 17 ready for traffic
Four miles of improved roadway will open Monday
COVINGTON, Ky.– A newly improved, four-mile section of KY 17, from Pelly Road to KY 16 in Kenton County, will open to traffic on Monday.
“I am pleased that the new alignment of KY 17 is now complete and open for traffic,” Transportation Secretary Joe Prather said. “We recognize the importance of modern roadways for businesses and commuters in Independence and Northern Kentucky.”
There were two phases of the project, totaling $23 million. At Pelly Road or the existing KY 17, it is a continuation of four lanes with a depressed median. From the Harris Road/KY 536 intersection it is a continuation of four lanes with a continuous turning lane. Sidewalks, curb and gutters and bike lanes also have been added.
Other improvements include rebuilding McCullum Pike from the new alignment of KY 17 to Oliver Road and constructing a new bridge over Fowler Creek. Intersections at Pelly Road/Old 17, McCullum Pike, and the Harris Road were improved, as were entrances for Sydney Drive, Kenton Elementary and Simon Kenton High School.
“The new alignment of KY 17 is another example of our commitment to improving safety on our highways. With school getting ready to begin, students and parents will enjoy the benefits,” said Tom Schomaker, Chief District Engineer.
Kenton County Judge-Executive Ralph Drees said the KY 17 project holds many potential benefits for Kenton County.
“This project opens the door to significant economic development opportunities in Independence and southern Kenton County, creating good jobs, improved access to essential services and enhancing the overall quality of life in the community,” Drees said.
