Interstate 71 to Be Reduced to One Lane in Jefferson County
Louisville, KY (September 7, 2011) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 5 Office advises motorists that Interstate 71 will be reduced to one lane between Interstate 64 in downtown Louisville and Interstate 264 (Watterson Expressway). Weekday lane closures will take place as part of the construction project to resurface the roadway and perform bridge deck repairs.
Interstate 71 will be reduced to one lane in both directions from 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 9th until 6:00 a.m. on Monday, September 12th. Work may vary between the left and right lanes, but at least one lane will remain open in each direction.
In addition, the exit ramp from southbound I-71 to Zorn Avenue (Exit 2) and the entrance ramp from Zorn Avenue to northbound I-71 will be closed during this time frame. Motorists should follow the posted detour signs.
Beginning at 6:00 a.m. on Monday, September 12th, the right lane of southbound I-71 will be closed. The right lane will remain closed through 6:00 a.m. on Monday, September 19th. The right lane only will be closed during this time frame. Construction efforts will shift to the left lane of southbound I-71 on September 19th. The left lane only will be closed through September 23rd. These continuous lane closures will allow for bridge deck restoration.
For the weekend of September 16th – 18th, I-71 will again be reduced to one lane in both directions from 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 16th until 6:00 a.m. on Monday, September 19th. Work may vary between the left and right lanes, but at least one lane will remain open in each direction.
Wide loads will not be permitted through the work zone. A signed detour will be in place via Interstate 264 and Interstate 64.
Lengthy delays are anticipated with these lane closures. Motorists should consider alternate routes or allow extra time to reach their destination.
Gohmann Asphalt and Construction was awarded the contract for this project in the amount of $10.9 million. The work began the week of August 1st and is scheduled for completion by December 15, 2011.
Milling of the old asphalt and resurfacing is being performed between Interstate 64 and the Blankenbaker Lane overpass (mile points 0.0 and 3.5). Repairs are being made to the concrete on nine sets of bridges between downtown and I-264 (mile points 0.0 and 5.5).
On average, 60,000 vehicles travel this section of roadway each day. The speed limit in the work zone is reduced to 45 MPH.
The actual starting date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur.
