Construction under way for Travelers Information Project
Message signs and cameras to be installed on area roadways

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (June 30, 2011) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is installing message signs and traffic-monitoring cameras to improve traffic flow and safety for drivers on interstate highways and parkways in five counties – Boone, Gallatin, Hardin, Jefferson and Oldham.

Arrow Electric, of Louisville, was awarded a $1.5 million contract to install seven new side-mounted message signs and eight cameras.  The devices will become a part of KYTC’s overall Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), which relays information to motorists about traffic incidents and delays through the 511 system and roadway message signs.

New signs and cameras are being installed at the following locations:

• Northbound KY 841 (part of the Gene Snyder Freeway) in Jefferson County at New Cut Road (mile point 6.8)
• Southbound I-265/KY 841 (Gene Snyder Freeway) in Jefferson County at Smyrna Road (mile point 13.5)
• Northbound I-265/KY 841 near Rehl Road (mile point 24.2)– sign only
• Taylorsville Road interchange with I-265/KY 841 (mile point 23.1) – camera only
• Southbound I-265/KY 841 at Old Henry Road (mile point 28)
• Northbound I-71 at the Jefferson/Oldham County line (mile point 11.6)
• Eastbound Western Kentucky Parkway, Hardin County, at mile point 129
• Southbound I-71, Boone County, at mile point 73.9
• I-71, Gallatin County, at mile point 66.9 – camera only

In addition, seven existing overhead message signs will be replaced on the interstate system in Jefferson County.  Work on the entire project is scheduled for completion in January 2012.

The actual starting date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur.  Dial 511 or log on to 511.ky.gov for the latest in traffic and travel information in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.  You can also get traffic information for the District 5 counties at www.facebook.com/KYTCDistrict5.
