Gov. Fletcher awards Transportation Enhancement funds totaling $194,000 in Spencer County

LOUISVILLE, KY –(June 21, 2005)—Representatives of Governor Ernie Fletcher’s office and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet today awarded Transportation Enhancement funds totaling nearly two hundred thousand dollars to officials in the City of Taylorsville and Spencer County.

“By awarding these funds to the City of Taylorsville and to Spencer County, we are fulfilling the Fletcher administration’s primary mission which is to improve economic development and the quality of life for the citizens of the Commonwealth,” said Bill Nighbert, acting Transportation secretary.

The $194,000 award involves the replacement of 41 year old sidewalks, the removal of existing utility poles and the relocation of electrical lines, and additional street lighting, benches and landscaping in the heart of the Taylorsville Historic District.  The completion of this project will eliminate safety concerns and further enhance visibility from the highway and improve the view of many historic properties aligned with
KY 44/Main Street. 

The Transportation Enhancement program was created by federal legislation in 1991 to offer states funding opportunities to expand transportation choices and increase recreational access.  Communities may also use TE funds to contribute toward the revitalization of local and regional economies by restoring historic buildings, renovating streetscapes or providing transportation museums and visitors centers.
