Kentucky’s district judges attend annual judicial college
FRANKFORT, Ky., Oct. 26, 2005 - Nearly 120 district judges from throughout Kentucky took part in the 2005 District Judges College offered by the Administrative Office of the Courts. The conference took place in September at the Louisville Marriott Downtown.
"District Court judges are called upon to deal with a wide range of cases, many of which involve substance abuse and domestic relations issues,” said Judge Susan Johnson, outgoing president of the Kentucky District Judges Association and chief regional district judge for Johnson, Lawrence and Martin counties. “We want to equip judges with the information and problem-solving abilities they need to appropriately handle such cases.”
District judges, court officials and other professionals conducted the conference. Among those who gave presentations were Secretary of State Trey Grayson, retired journalist Robert Schulman of Louisville, and Brian Bishop, executive director of the Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services.
District Court is a court of limited jurisdiction which hears civil cases involving $4,000 or less, juvenile matters, city and county ordinances, misdemeanors, cases relating to domestic violence and abuse, guardianships for disabled people, traffic offenses, probates of wills and felony preliminary hearings. The Administrative Office of the Courts is the operational arm of the Kentucky Court of Justice and supports the activities of more than 3,400 court system employees, including the elected offices of justices, judges and circuit court clerks. The AOC also executes the Judicial Branch budget.
