Susan Johnson, chief regional district judge for the Mountain Region and district judge for Johnson, Lawrence and Martin counties, has been elected president of the Kentucky District Judges’ Association, announced Chief Justice of Kentucky Joseph E. Lambert. “In Judge Johnson, I have a friend and colleague with whom I work closely,” said Chief Justice Lambert. “I applaud the decision of her association in electing Susan as its president.”
Judge Johnson was elected president by her fellow judges at the District Judges’ College, which took place in Owensboro last fall. She will serve a two-year term. As president of the Kentucky District Judges’ Association, she administers the business of the association, which is comprised of the state’s 114 district judges. The role calls for her to establish committees and preside over committee meetings, monitor legislation affecting the courts, serve as spokesperson for the district judges and preside at the judicial conferences held for district judges.
“It’s an honor to serve my fellow judges on the District Court,” said Judge Johnson. “This position offers many opportunities, not the least of which is the chance to spend time in Frankfort during the General Assembly.”
Judge Johnson is a native of Paintsville. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Pikeville College and a law degree from the University of Tulsa College of Law. Before being appointed, and then elected, to the District Court bench in 1992, she was in private practice with her father, B.E. Mullins, as a partner with Mullins Law Office, PSC, in Paintsville. She also served as an administrative law judge for the Kentucky Natural Resources & Environmental Protection Cabinet and as a trustee for the Pikeville Division of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court.
Judge Johnson and her husband, Gary, have two children, Shane, 32, and Cody, 18. She said she enjoys being a grandmother and spending time with Shane’s two sons, Cade and Reece.
The Administrative Office of the Courts supports the activities of more than 3,300 Kentucky Court of Justice personnel, including the elected offices of justices, judges and circuit court clerks. The AOC serves as the fiscal agent for the Kentucky Court of Justice and is under the direction of Chief Justice of Kentucky Joseph E. Lambert and Director Cicely Jaracz Lambert.
