Justice Janet L. Stumbo has been reappointed to the Kentucky Bar Center Board of Trustees, the Supreme Court of Kentucky announced today.
Justice Stumbo of Prestonsburg is the first woman elected to the Kentucky Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of Kentucky. She has served the 7th Supreme Court District since her election in November 1993.
As a trustee of the Kentucky Bar Center, Justice Stumbo participates in the governing body for the headquarters of the Kentucky Bar Association, which serves more than 13,000 attorneys statewide. Members of the nine-person board serve three-year terms and are responsible for overseeing all aspects of the ownership and management of the bar center headquarters in Frankfort.
"I'm pleased the Supreme Court has chosen to reappoint me to this position," said Justice Stumbo.
"I look forward to my continuing work with the lawyers of Kentucky to bring improvements to our shared profession."
Justice Stumbo earned her bachelor’s degree from Morehead State University and her juris doctor from the University of Kentucky College of Law. Following law school, she served as a staff attorney for the Kentucky Court of Appeals. She later worked in private practice with the firms of Turner, Hall & Stumbo, PSC and Stumbo, DeRossett & Pillersdorf, and was assistant county attorney for Floyd County. She was elected to the Kentucky Court of Appeals in 1989 and served for four years.
Justice Stumbo was elected to the Morehead State University Hall of Fame in 1990. The Kentucky Women Advocates recognized her work in the area of spousal abuse with their Justice Award in 1991. In 1995, her efforts on behalf of gender fairness won her the Outstanding Jurist Award from the Kentucky Women Advocates and the Bull’s Eye Award from the Women in State Government Network. In 1996, she received the first Women Lawyers of Achievement Award from the Kentucky Bar Association for Women.
Justice Stumbo resides in Prestonsburg with her husband, attorney Ned Pillersdorf, and their three daughters. The 7th Supreme Court District includes the following counties: Boyd, Breathitt, Carter, Elliott, Floyd, Greenup, Harlan, Johnson, Knott, Lawrence, Letcher, Magoffin, Martin, Menifee, Montgomery, Morgan, Owsley, Perry, Pike, Powell, Rowan and Wolfe.
