FRANKFORT, Ky., June 14, 2003 . More than 250 Kentucky attorneys attended a June 13 session on the ethics of law and the media offered during the 2003 Kentucky Bar Association Convention at the Kentucky International Convention Center in Louisville. Discussing the often opposing views of journalists and the legal profession produced a lively debate, according to Bob Schulman, longtime journalist and coordinator of "It's a Wrap: The Ethics of Law and the Media."
The session consisted of two panel discussions, the first moderated by Schulman, who heads the Bench/Bar/Media Program for the Administrative Office of the Courts in Frankfort. The panelists were Chris Jadick, news director of WAVE 3-TV in Louisville; Michael Alexieff, editor of the Bowling Green Daily News; John T. Ballantine, an attorney with Ogden, Newell & Welch and the Kentucky Bar Association's 2003 Lawyer of the Year; and the Honorable Deborah Deweese, a Jefferson County District Court judge. The panelists engaged in an evaluation of attitudes about the media/justice system relationship taken from a survey last fall of several thousand Kentucky lawyers.
Part two of the session featured a "Bench/Bar/Media Round Table." John T. McGarvey of Morgan & Pottinger moderated a group of 30 prominent Kentucky lawyers, judges and journalists. "This was perhaps the largest assemblage of media/justice system leaders ever brought together for a program on hot-button issues affecting the way bench, bar and journalism serve the public," said Schulman. McGarvey, a former Lexington TV news anchor and now a lawyer and moderator of KET election results analysis, tested reaction of the panelists and the audience to the premiere of three newly produced mini-videos about the conflict that can result from media/justice system interactions.
The "It's a Wrap" session was sponsored by the Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC), the Kentucky Bar Association and the Louisville-Jefferson County Public Defender's Office. The AOC supports the activities of more than 3,300 Kentucky Court of Justice employees, including the elected offices of justices, judges and circuit court clerks. As the fiscal agent for the Court of Justice, the AOC executes the Judicial Branch budget.
