Students from 28 Kentucky High Schools Compete in Poetry Out Loud State Finals

FRANKFORT, Ky. The Kentucky Arts Council will present the state finals for the Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest which will bring the winners of each of 28 Kentucky high school competitions to vie for the state championship. The competition presented in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, is part of a national program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance and competition.

 

The state finals, which are open to the public, will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. E.S.T., March 3, 2009 at Western Hills High School, 100 Doctors Drive, Frankfort, Ky.

 

The winner of the state finals will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington D.C. and advance to the National Finals, April 27-28, 2009, where students will compete for $50,000 in scholarships and school prizes.

 

Competing students are: Jacob Starks, Allen County-Scottsville High School, Scottsville; Torie DiMartile, Beechwood High School, Fort Mitchell; Alex Gambrel, Bell County High School, Pineville; Taylor Wallace, Bethlehem High School, Bardstown; Kali Mattingly, Boyd County High School, Ashland; Robbie Knetsche, Boyle County High School, Danville;  Michael King, Bracken County High School, Brooksville; Mary Esther Fremin, Carroll County High School, Carrollton; Nikki Gamble, Eminence High School, Eminence; Garrett Walters, Frankfort High School, Frankfort; Jacquise Lockett, Fulton Independent School, Hickman; Chandler Taylor, Glasgow High School, Glasgow; Austin Vance, Greenup County High School, Greenup; Miranda Lindsey, Harlan County High School, Harlan; James Rogers, Hart County High School, Munfordville; Elizabeth Hall, Highlands High School, Fort Thomas; Joseph Cross, Knox Central High School, Barbourville; Dakota Rogers, Mercer County Senior High School, Harrodsburg; Kenaniah Taft, North Bullitt High School, Shepherdsville, Madeline Rise, Ohio County High School, Hartford; Blair Boyd, Oldham County High School, Buckner; Michael Alex Owings, Paducah Tilghman High School, Paducah; Rebecca Kelly, Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, Lexington; Rachel Hall, Pineville High School, Pineville; Alexina Wilson, Portland Christian School, Louisville; Kimberly Baugh, Russellville High School, Russellville, Maggie Watkins, Simon Kenton High School, Independence; and Barbara Gooding, Western Hills High School, Frankfort.

 

Kentucky writers Crystal Wilkinson, Jane Gentry and Frederick Smock will serve as judges for the Kentucky state finals.
