Hodgenville Issues Call to Artists for Lincoln Sculpture
(Frankfort, KY) --The City of Hodgenville, Kentucky, birthplace of Abraham Lincoln, announces a Call for Artists to commission a sculpture of Abraham Lincoln to celebrate the 200th anniversary of his birth. The dedication of this piece will be a signature event held during the two-year national observance (2008-2010).
Artists are invited to make a proposal to create a life-sized sculpture of the boy Lincoln, which will be located approximately ninety (90) feet in front of the existing bronze seated Lincoln sculpture in a circular park area in the town square. This area will include landscaping, sidewalks, benches and informational plaques. Born February 12, 1809 near Hodgenville, Kentucky, Abraham Lincoln spent the first 7 years and 10 months (the formative years) of his life in this area. Though the Lincoln family moved out of Kentucky in December 1816, Lincoln held deep ties to his home state and felt Kentucky a lasting influence on him throughout his life.
This sculpture will sit in a newly redesigned town square that currently includes a seated bronze sculpture of the adult President Lincoln by Adolph A. Weinmann that was commissioned by Congress in 1909 in honor of the 100th anniversary of the President’s birth. The budget for this commission is $165,000.

Funding for this project has been provided by the Kentucky Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission through the Kentucky Arts Council, which has worked in an advisory capacity with the city of Hodgenville and the Lincoln Sculpture Committee in developing the guidelines, criteria and request for proposal for the public art commission.
