FRANKFORT, Ky. — The Kentucky Folklife Program will present a series of training sessions as part of the Community Scholars certification program in Covington at various locations in Kenton County.

 

The Community Scholars training is designed to help people document and promote community culture, folklife and the traditional arts.  Community Scholars learn the basic skills needed to conduct fieldwork, identify and showcase traditional arts and musical talents, folk traditions and local history.  An "Introduction to Folklife" session will be from 1 – 4 p.m., Friday, September 19 at the Center for Great Neighborhoods, 1650 Russell Street, Covington, KY 41011.

 

To become certified as a Community Scholar, individuals must successfully complete the program calendar as follows;

 

Friday, September 19, 1 - 4 p.m. "Introduction to Folklife"

Center for Great Neighborhoods, 1650 Russell Street, Covington, KY 41011

 

Saturday, September 20, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. "Conducting Oral Histories"

Kenton County Public Library, 502 Scott Boulevard, Covington, KY 41011 and

Artisans' Enterprise Center, 25 West Seventh Street, Covington, KY 41011

 

Friday, October 3, 1 - 4 p.m. "Fieldwork"

Graduation will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2008, at the Behringer-Crawford Museum. This training program is free and open to all Kentucky residents. All levels of experience are welcome.

 

Community Scholars graduates are eligible for exclusive grant opportunities through the Kentucky Arts Council and will become a part of the growing network of over 100 certified Community Scholars across the commonwealth.  Community Scholars training programs have been conducted in Paducah, Bowling Green, Frankfort, Covington, Hodgenville, Catlettsburg, Cynthiana, Paintsville and Madisonville.

The Kentucky Folklife Program, whose mission is to identify, document and conserve the state’s diverse cultural traditions, is an interagency program of the Kentucky Historical Society and the Kentucky Arts Council.
